Dear Editor,

Thanks, Stranger Election Control Board, for your endorsement. Wow, maybe the revolution will be televised!

As for your suggestion that I leave the Freedom Socialist Party for the Democrats, hell will freeze before that happens. I dumped the Dems for socialism in the 1980s, after “liberal” Pres. Jimmy Carter reinstated registration for the draft. Since then, well-meaning folks have advised, “You’ll get further if you drop the ‘s’ word.”

But, truth be told, any progress toward justice in this country is due to independent political mass movements, with radicals and socialists leading the way. On the other hand, look at what the Democrats did to the massive anti-war movement which was out in the streets at the start of the Iraq War. Like you advise me, they urged protesters to “join the mainstream dialogue” via the Kerry campaign--and they killed the movement.

I’m a revolutionary feminist because I’ve studied Marxism and it makes far more sense than so-called “free-market” theories à la Milt Friedman and trickle-down Bush. What Marx scientifically showed is that, if humanity is to evolve, socialism is the next stage. Global productive forces are advanced enough to feed the entire world, and reduce the workweek—if the economy were planned, wealth shared, and industry publicly owned under the control of workers.

Instead, under capitalism, (or “market forces” as Jan Drago calls it) we get wars, man-made disasters like New Orleans, the trashing of our environment, and AIDS epidemics. The sooner we close Wall Street, the better for us and the world. Viva socialismo!

By the way, I call for a $17/hour minimum wage for all who work in Seattle, not just city contractors. In every nation (except Cuba) the poor are getting poorer and the rich richer. Few of us are paid what we need to survive, which in overpriced Seattle is at least $17 an hour.

In solidarity,
Linda Averill
Seattle City Council candidate Position 4

I also support you, Linda. You seem the most well put together of all the position 4 candidates.

However, $17 an hour is a bit much. First of all, I have lived comfortably on as little as $10 an hour as recently as a few months ago, and currently live comfortably on about $12. And though I use public transport and pay a few hundred a month in student loan payments, I'm not exactly a minimalist: I actually go out to eat more than most people. Though we can get behind a movement to bump up the minimum wage (and that's a movement I'm all for), I don't think we need to bump it that high.

Also, many businesses struggle to survive while paying the state minimum $7.35 an hour to their employees. Making them pay $17 an hour would kill so much business in Seattle that there wouldn't be many places left to spend our newfound savings... those of us who were still employed, at least.

Yes, let's move to raise the minimum wage in Seattle. But let's take baby steps and make sure small businesses have the ability to keep up.

That said, you're the best candidate for Position 4. Go Linda Averil!

I'm glad that The Stranger endorsed Linda although a fair amount of the endorsement included smart-ass comments about socialism. I'm not a member of the Freedom Socialist Party per se but along with Radical Women they've been in the forefront of women's rights and tenants rights for the last 30 years. Also, I don't think after the support they've given her, Linda is going to say screw you to the ``Socialist Bookstore Ghetto" to hook up with the ``Kucinich bloc in Ballard."

I think the Stranger was joking. Seemed more like a clever endorsement of Jan Drago, a kick ass real world politician who has accomplished a lot in Seattle.

We were not joking. We highly recommend Linda Averill. While her politics can be too doctrinaire (she's a Socialist), she distinguished herself from most of the dissidents running for city council this year because she's wicked smart; has a thorough handle on the big issues (the viaduct, SLU, housing) and the wonky details (the lease lid, heights on broadway, strip club rules); and she's got the charisma to rev up the city council and turn it into a bona fide watchdog on the mayor. Sure, we like the mayor's overall agenda, but again, we've had to spend a lot of time busting him for sell outs to folks like Harbor Properties, Vulcan, and the Sonics. If you haven't voted already, vote Averill in today's primary.

Really, Josh, are you already drunk before tonight's party? Be serious people, vote for Jan Drago. We need to get real shit done, not try to put some crazy socialist agenda promoting $17 an hour minimum wages in place. Linda's performance at the Music Community Candidates forum was awful. She answered questions about local issues with speeches on pulling out of Iraq. I agree Iraq is a dumb war, criminal probably, but what that has to do with running for City Council I don't know.

Josh, I am so happy that you and Dan sucked it in and did the wise thing by endorsing Richard Conlin. Dan 'hates' him, whatever that means, but you endorsed the right guy who seems to have been the only Councilmember who we can now look back on as being correctly cynical about the monorail finance plan.

And Dwight Pelz. Your description was great. He will kick ass on council. And he can drink whiskey with the best of them, like Dow.
