I recently moved and found a bunch of ticket stubs and posters of shows I'd been to and couldn't help but miss places like The OK Hotel, The Weathered Wall, Sit & Spin, Colourbox, RCKNDY, and Moe's and bands that "never made it" like Medelicious, Dickweed, Third Door Down, and Micheline Impossible. What were your favorite places and bands to see?

Whoa, I totally forgot about the Lake Union Pub. Seattle's classic dive bars are all dying out. That place was a shithole (thank god).

yeah,

i'm not from Seatlle, i live in France, but i saw a few days ago a band from seatle, so it's my favorite Seattle band !
this band is called Emma Zunz, do you know ? Two Girls, two guitars, two microphones. I saw them a few days ago in Lyon, France, and i was very impressed by their very intimist show. they were previously with the band "Switch" do you know ? i would be interested in having any recordings of switch, i read that Annie (know in Emma Zunz) used to play musical saw with Switch !

Dude! Thanks for the kind words, do I know you? You sound like a "fun guy". I can't believe you've actually cared enough to follow my transition between bands. That makes me all choked up. I owe you a beer man. Wanna join the Turn to Fall Street Team? We need help getting the word out!!!!

That reminded me of another, I miss Sweetwater! I love Sweetwater.

So, the choice is between this true statement:

"Yeah, I saw Sweetwater at DV8...but a year later I saw the Parc Boys do an in-store at Orpheum"--and realizing that anyone who moved to town within the past three years would have NO idea what I was talking about...

OR this true statement:

"Oh, yeah, I saw Sweetwater, Sky Cries Mary and The Posies open up for Crash Test Dummies (?!?!) at the Puyallup Fair"

Your choice which is more embarrassing.

Option three...
"My first show after moving to Seattle was seeing Faith & Disease and Black Atmosphere at the Colourbox...and I walked from 17th & Union and back to see the show."

You know, some of these things I shouldn't admit in public...

I miss the Palm Room at 1st and Wall with the tacky Polynesian decor, complete with palapas and blacklights, and of course the recently deceased Lou Bianchi at the piano bar. It's now the Pampas Room below El Gaucho.

I saw Sweetwater at DV8 too, I wasn't old enough to go anywhere else. I saw Gruntruck at the Colourbox - it was either all ages or I was old enough - it's all a blur. I used to follow Sky Cry's Mary around like a lost puppy. Hell, I even saw them play at Marymoor Park! What's funny is before this thread I had long since forgotten nearly all these bands/ experiences. - All not embarrasing - in fact I think those bands and that time was great! "Cept, that whole Crash test dummie comment - yeah.. don't mention that around your cool friends. lol ;)

No kidding. Luckily, I never had one. I would hate to have been caught with one. I managed to get in to clubs and bars here and there but honestly, I haven't been to a truly great house party since I turned 21.

nothing embarrassing about this one unless you stayed for the CTD set. :-)

That was in 1995! It would have been a great show minus the Crash Test Dummies, but that is how shows at the Fair go I am sure. They were at the end of being popular at the time due to that god-awful humming song weren't they?

Random Posies Fact- That show was Brian Young's first show as the new drummer for The Posies before he eventually moved to CA and became the drummer for Fountains of Wayne.

Well, then it's embarrassing...because the person who drove us was a big Crash Test Dummies fan...and my then girlfriend and I ended up missing seeing Everything But the Girl at the Backstage in Ballard that same night (which we'd purchased tickets for) because our ride insisted that we wait until the very last note of the encore of Crash Test Dummies before we could head out... At the time, my girlfriend and I didn't have a car...and we could have made the EBTG show if our friend would have been willing to drop us off at the Backstage. Instead, our friend refused to take us to Ballard and dropped us off at our apartment on Capitol Hill...

Ever try to take a bus from Capitol Hill to Ballard when you're in a hurry? And the soonest a cab was willing to pick us up would have been an hour or more later...by which time the EBTG show would have been over.

Nothing like sitting in the bleachers of the Puyallup Fairgrounds, gritting your teeth in quiet frustration while one of your favorite Replacements songs is being butchered by a one hit wonder...(Crash Test Dummies covered "Androgynous" for those curious.)

I miss Pho Bang at the old Foxes. Man that place was a dump, but it was the perfect kind of dump to have Pho Bang in! I would have to say that was the most fun night in the city, and they always had the best unknown bands playing.

Sit & spin should have been a fucking chain it was such a cool idea. In fact, I was really excited to find out they have bars in the laundromats in Reno until I went to one and it stunk of misery like the twilight lounge. (don't get me wrong, the tl is an ok bar but I hate drinking in places where all the clientele drink shit beer or well drinks only and reek of discontent and defeat). Dave Meinert deserves big props for putting that together besides being a real nice guy. Too bad it didn't survive until I was actually old enough to drink there *sobs*

pgreyy - Bummer. Some "friend", holds you hostage then won't drive you a few more miles to Ballard?

Really miss the Backstage, especially since the lame Tractor has filled in for it. Good size, and with its tiered seating sitters could actually sit and see the band while people danced in front of the stage, much like Astor Park, another club I miss.

Metropolis. Rosco Louie... and the other ones that Larry Reid had a hand in. What was that one by the int'l district? It'll come to me and I will add it later... Ahh, got it: Graven Image. Thanks Larry.

Spider's Web was awesome if short lived. Gorilla Gardens was a staple for a few years. Great all ages place. And the OK wasn't too bad at first...

Sneaking into the original Vogue and the old Central (before it became a frat bar) was easy when I was as young as 16 (just drawing the hand stamp and not trying to order beer).

Party house for illicit shows.

Squid row.

Lake Union Pub was a proper shit hole institution and is sadly missed (and obviously by more than just me).

Gibson was great.

Some great all ages spots in Tacoma, can't remember their name (Jim May was the guy, I think?). And the club in Bremerton that necessitated a ferry ride to get there (to see GBH, for example... rowdy ferry ride back...).

The old Off Ramp was fun.

RKCNDY or however the hell they spelled it sucked, but some good bands played there.

Yes and Yes! Indeed!
Had 666 brew at the LUP, and watched as my freinds band butchered "Fire" at Gibsons to throngs of elistists clapping that it was over.

Never made it into the Offramp until it became either Graceland or Sub Zero, which ever was first. A shame what has become of that. The Storeroom wasn't half bad either, now it's the Mars Bar and Venus Cafe'. Meh, that's what I got for it. Place leaves a bitter taste...

Saw the Reatards at the Gibson, while Derek from the Seattle-area Retards was outside watching since he wasn't 21. Jay from the Reatards found out he was out there and in the middle of a song ran outside to the sidewalk and punched him in the face and came back saying something like "there's only one Reatards!"

A couple shows there a bunch of people ordered blue punchbowl drinks all night, hilarious, although I bet more than one person puked blue crap in the bathroom.

So many good shows at the Pub, the Rip Offs was up there... Lotta great local bands as well.

Forgot to mention the Velvet Elvis, for keeping above ground all ages shows happening during the terrible teen dance ordinance days. Some great bands played there, not just the indie and emo crap. Meg rules for keeping that place going for so long. Went to the Circle Jerks show at the north side of Queen Anne hill that turned into a riot (in the snow) with punks throwing bricks through cop car windows and cops beating the shit out of anyone they could grab. Fire dept shut it down, ad Keith Morris kept screaming in his whiny coice "get yer money back, man!" Lou Guzzo punced on it, and voila, teen dance ordinance.
