Regarding the necessity of tipping your barista, I felt it could have been written about me. But that doesn't mean I feel bad.
Here's the deal: Today I went and got a li'l coffee that cost less than $2.
I had no other change besides the six cents the barista gave me.
Faced with the option of forking over another buck or the stupid six cents or just skipping the jar, I took option 3.
Mitigating factor: I was getting my drink to go. (Hanging out is an immediate reason to err on the side of excess when it comes to tipping for me.)
Another: I often fork over a buck tip on my two-buck drink to cover the next day, when I'll stiff you. Cycle repeats every other visit.
Does this suck? If I'm not willing to fork over a buck everytime I get a two-buck coffee, should I stay the hell out? It would be easy enough to do...I could just switch to those goddamn little cold Starbucks bottles I can get at the gas station, where nobody expects automatic tips for anything.
