PS most of the Google News results for Seattle were about your shitty sports teams.
Just for fun:
Google News search for tacoma stories: +tacoma -seattle = 2,910
Google News search for seattle stories: -tacoma +seattle = 53,900

I'm not gonna comment on most of the malice from this anonymous guy, but I must make a point:
And how is it that you claim “The only time Tacoma ends makes the national news is when one of its citizens opens fire on innocent people.” when according to Google News Tacoma was in: Business News New York on 11/29/05, PR Newswire on 11/03/05, The Portland Mercury on 11/24/05, Artnet on 11/14/05, Art Daily on 11/18/05, Christian Science Monitor on 11/15/2005, The Japan Times on 12/1/ 2005, just to name a few articles.
He's referring to the national news, via the Associated Press, not magazines, foreign papers or fringe pubs. But nice try.
Most of the rest of the post is baseless, heavy on the hatred and light on the facts. And if Charles Mudede doesn't know where the entrance to the Tacoma Mall is, how did he walk through it as he stated in the article?
You just have a complex, 72. Get over it. And BTW, from personal observation, Tacoma isn't that much of a city, even with the little light rail train. And no one's even shot at me there.

i was dealing with the perception of tacoma and not tacoma itself. seattle might have more violence and perverts than tacoma but that is not how it is perceived. dating all the way back to the days of the yukon gold nonsense, seattle has been more successful at managing and promoting its image than tacoma--a city that repeatedly fails to look good before the world because it has in the nothingness of its guts a wolf-hunger to become the king of the hill. tacoma will not sleep until it is the seattle of the pacific northwest. portland, on the other hand, sleeps well because its stomach is full of itself.
one last thing: i wish those hookers also paid my child support.

I agree: Seattle is a shithole. But it's a shithole that thinks it's Paris, France. (Pre-riots.) At least Tacoma is, or is often, honest about its shithole status. That's what I admire about Tacoma most.

I can't help imagining the Seattle Media being driven around in a van by a wolf, just like the ignoble way that Hunger gets driven around by social workers.

You were, " dealing with the perception of tacoma and not tacoma itself"? Really? It sounded more like you were furthering and exploiting the image of Tacoma as a violent, vapid, seedy place.
Crime rates are as follows:
Overall Tacoma Crime Index: 9,344 Per 100,00K
Overall Seattle Crime Index: 8,092 Per 100,00K
Tacoma Violent Crimes: 1017.5 Per 100,00K
Seattle Violent Crimes: 659.6 Per 100,00K
One word for you Charles: Busted.
I can't exactly figure out which side of this topic the original poster is on.
Everyone everwhere knows that the crime rates assure that Tacoma is a far less desirable destination for visiting or living than is Seattle.
Why did this thread even start, again?

Um, wasn't the article (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=25433) about the Tacoma Mall's shoppers' reaction to the shootings, more than an indictment of the city itself?

Please stop calling me Chuck. My mother, who is now dead, named me Charles. Chuck is the kind of name you give to dog food, not your son.

I dunno what the Stranger will do about Tacoma coverage (probably nothing more than usual), but I think Tacoma can help its cause by a) doing something about the terrible stench from the Harbor, b) cut down on the city's white-trash redneck quotient.
But seriously, I think the kiss of death is the fact that you're 45 miles from Seattle. The simple fact that I have to ride at least two hours on a bus just to get to your burg dissuades me from doing anything out there. I can get to Everett (!!!) or the Eastside in half an hour, but it takes me two hours to get to a toilet-stenched, white-trash city (perception via personal experiences, mine and others'). If I'm gonna throw four hours of my life in the garbage to travel, it had better be a great place to visit. Tacoma's not even close. Nice little light rail train, though.
IMAO, your city doesn't warrant coverage because it's an entirely separate city, and not much of a city at that. Start your own weekly and cover your fine town there if it's that important.

But he needs to write more about racism in seattle and the puget sound area.

Again, the point of the article was to take a look at how the Tacoma Mall's business did during Black Friday, given the day fell so soon after the shooting. It wasn't a cover study of the city and its culture. You're attacking him for something his article was not necessarily meant to focus on.
One other thing you missed, Altitude 72', is that I don't live downtown. If I wanted to visit Tacoma, I have to catch another bus to get to downtown, then walk over and wait for that 590 to show up, then ride for 45 minutes to Tacoma. Also, your times listed assume all buses are running on time, which any rider in Seattle can tell you they do not, especially if they have to travel on the freeways.
If I, say, wanted to see a Tacoma Rainiers game, I would ride during off peak hours and would face longer waits due to more lag time between connecting buses. In fact, I planned a while back on seeing one after work, but scuttled it after checking the trip planner, once I saw that a) it would be impossible to get there on time from my workplace in SODO for the 7:05 first pitch, unless I left at 4:30 pm, half an hour before closing time, and b) I would not be able to get home until 2 am due to certain buses ceasing runs for the night around 9 pm. In fact, unless I had left the game no later than 9:30, I would have had to walk at least a mile to catch a connecting bus to Seattle. To see them on the weekends with a 1:05 start time, I'd have to leave around 10:30 am, and wouldn't get back home until 7 pm! And that's if everything runs on time and the game doesn't go to extra innings, or I leave early regardless of the score. I can go see the single A club in Everett because the 511 runs until 10 and can get me to Everett in half an hour.
And air pollution is a worldwide issue, not just a regional one. You can't just tell drivers in places such as your to quit driving to Seattle. And Tacoma's pollution smells like ass, rather than exhaust.

Tacoma suffers from a bad case of sensitivity. If the city were a single human being it would be a hunchback--a man who is too aware (embarrassingly aware) of his physical flaw.

So now that the Charles Mudede Hate-a-thon is facing articulate, point-by-point refutation, 72feet writes:
Is there a way to close threads? ... I think my thread here has run it's course...
If only the ridiculously bilious smoking ban flame wars could be made to fold up their tent so easily.

I beleive Mudede's analogies are not reactionary hate speach, but observances regarding a overly sensitive readers.
And the rest of the snark, was well, snark; attitude infused sarcasm.
Sarcasm is as American as apple pie, so learn how to appreciate it, use it, and not cower in its presence nor lower yourself to the shameful level of accusing a message board conversation of being on par with the likes of Bill O'Reily.

72' initiated this 'dialogue' by insulting Charles Mudede for not using his article about the Tacoma Mall's post-shooting mall business to write a nonsensically positive commentary about Tacoma, WA.
You don't want dialogue. Otherwise, this thread would be called 'What is the real Tacoma?' and would have been initiated by referencing the article and then asking the Tacoma Question, rather than going into diatribes about what an idiot Charles Mudede is.
