From I, Anon: (http://forums.thestranger.com/showthread.php?t=1826)

If the *sole reason* that people go to your club/bar/restaraunt is to smoke then you really need to look up the words "diversify" in a business dictionary. If a smoking ban is going to put you out of business, then quite franky you never really were in business to begin with. You are like those dot coms that crashed and blamed it all on 9/11.

Good Riddance.

This is like the city burning down your house and saying you ended up homeless because you didn't know how to adapt.

First of all, patrons in bars which cater to smokers don't just smoke. They drink and eat. Not having to leave the establishment to smoke gives them the chance to hang out uninterrupted and relax, which makes it more likely they'll order more drinks and food. It's not just an isolated factor and I'm getting tired of sniping non-smokers acting like it is. Losing the right to smoke creates a chain reaction of losses.

And bars are bars. They all serve drinks, some have pool tables, dart boards and video games. There really isn't much room in the budget or space for diversification in most dives. Your argument is a petty and shallow argument.

Most restaurants lost nothing because most restaurants didn't allow smoking in the first place. Those that did had distinct smoking and non-smoking sections, with the smoking sections often being smaller and shoved towards the back. Some who catered to late nighters who smoked, like Minnie's, will suffer, but unlike bars there's room in restaurants for your aforementioned diversification. Minnie's and other smoker stops can adjust.

And the state didn't pass a law that fucked over the dot-coms. Bad parallel.

And quit, people, with hiding your identity in I, Anon while taking public potshots on relevant issues. You wanna talk big but you don't have the sack to put your name next to your opinion, or open it up for discussion? As you can see here, we're gonna open it up for discussion anyway, so you may as well log in and put a name to the statement.

Of course, if you're not gonna bother, then Good Riddance.
