Ease up tiger, just poking a little fun. If you could read the irony in that post you'd know it was just some good natured ribbing. That is all. I'm fans of all those bands and I don't think a little teasing will hurt their record sales. Egos? Maybe.

Horses is the new ex-Carissas band on Sub Pop. I've yet to hear them, but expect good things. The War Room? Fucking fantastic. Roof-top deck with a bar, and a really cool music room.

im putting in voyager one, joy wants eternity, kinski, and hypatia lake as my favorite live bands... that would make for a nice line-up (not giving much consideration for hearing loss) .

I saw horses with voyager one, i thought they were alright.

As a matter of fact, I do. SMO is a loose organization of bands who help each other out, lumping us all together is a little short sighted, but, it's a free country. Clarkie, you were just telling me how "metal" the Braindead was! Jumpin ship on us so soon? ;)

I can't say I know much about metal, but am intrigued by how many bands have been listed in the last few days that I have never heard of! I will be sure to investigate.
I am more of a pretty vocals, great lyrics kind of person myself.

Bloody
May 26th, 2005, 01:04 PM
If you like things a bit more melodic with great lyrics I would suggest you seek out Enkrya, Dissonance, Dog Bone Sanctuary, Dangermart, threequarterminus, River Red, FMLY (my current favorite local band!) www.fmlyonline.com (no it's not my band either, as we are neither pretty or melodic!). That's just a start, there are tons of others, I've actually been curious as to what else is going on in the city. I pretty much go to metal shows, so if anyone wants to recommend something good, I'd love to go see it.

What I always find interesting is the number of pure pop acts that were total metal kids when they were younger. Listening to them now you would never know it, but they can all wank guitars with the best of them.
A favorite influence I hear named a lot is KISS. So many of our local boys who would otherwise be considered pop, shoe gazer music or emo totally have hard rock/metal roots.
I know Graig Markel for instance used to be pretty hair metal back in the day and the Posies were big rock guys when they were kids. Matt from The Capillaries was a big Kiss fan... the list goes on and on.
I just think it is interesting how there is probably a lot more crossover in the genres than one might initially suspect.

Bloody
May 26th, 2005, 03:44 PM
Having an open mind when it comes to veiwing/hearing other's art is essential. I remember the old Posies stuff, they had their moments for sure, also, bands like Mudhoney, Tad, the Murder City Devils et al. All of these bands had their metal moments and most mellowed a bit with age.

The sound of the music has a much heavier Metalcore influence to it but that doesnt make us a Metal band.

We still consider ourselves to be a Hardcore band and always will.

We also dont shop at Hot Topics, get our hair done at Salons, dont dye our hair black, comb it over or style it to look like bedhead. So I can really say we are a Metalcore band yet either.

Isn't metalcore that nu metal thing??? Also, Angels are not metal, and neither is God. If it was Satan giving Lemmy orgasms, then it would be metal...

Nu Metal: Limp Biskuit Korn

Metalcore: Darkest Hour, Hatebreed.........(hardcore kids playing Metal riffs)

Metal: Judas Priest, Hammersfall, Queensryche and so on...........

Should I keep going?

So simple Blood, you cant remember this shit.

When did Crust and Crustcore not be the same thing?

Smelly punks playing real fast, usually means Crustcore.

Or is Crust like more punk in sound but yet they just stink, have dreads and play more melodies?

Dissonance and Dog Bone Sanctuary are great bands more along the lines of Rock/Hard Rock.

The Braindead is a great hard rock band with a really strange twist (you would have to go see them to understand).

MTF, Drown Mary, Only Human, Hatefist are just really great and talented metal bands.

Non-Existence is one of the best death metal bands that I know of around here. Pure Brutality.

Utterance is one of those fusion rap/metal bands, but lately it seems like they are leaning more towards metal. Great stage presence!

FMLY rules, but I can't figure out how to categorize them other than alt-metal/alt-rock.

I know I missed a bunch of great bands, but I'll check back here often to make sure the rock/metal community has adequate representation in this forum.

The Accused, hands down one of the best bands ever.
Forced Entry
Skank Puppies
False Liberty
Bitter End
Subvert
Agony Of Deceit
Christdriver
Barbie Car
Unkle Betty

Most of them are all now RIP but lately I am pretty bored with most of the bands here in Seattle.

Drown Mary is on its next step too moving on up. It will be fun to see what happens. First band since AOD broke up in Seattle to get me excited.

Still getting used to the NEW FMLY, wasnt quite the same but very very good.

BlackGoat is killer.

I saw this band called "Turn to Fall" at the AltaRego show at Hell's Kitchen this past weekend. Both bands rocked! The crowd went pretty wild too. I signed up for Turn to Fall's mailing list and bought their CD. I've been listening to it non-stop! These guys can play and the singer's voice really grows on you. Lots of guitar solos and musicianship.

Apparently they are on some magazine cover down in LA so that's cool to see a local band getting some recognition. Progressive rock but with short catchy songs. Sort of like "the new rush", but with better vocals. I think fans of the mars volta would dig their music.

They are also on myspace.

I also really like AltaRego, The Beautiful Mothers, Kinski, Hypatia Lake, Peepshow, Windowpane, Point One.

Sun City Girls, without a doubt (someone earlier listed them as 'the next big thing', which seems odd considering they've been doing their thing quite successfully for over 20 years now)

Master Musicians of Bukkake (the real next big thing)

Liver & Bacon (you'll just have to trust me on this)

bad bands: most of what the stranger seems to write effusively about (though jennifer is not nearly as retarded as kathleen was). i question the money flow in this city between certain labels, clubs, promoters, 'street parties', and publishing entities.

it is all about money.

side note:sub pop sucks the big one right now. the new a frames record i got used, burned then resold, then erased off my laptop it was so bad.

and hey, dont forget subpop is 49% warner bros, all you punk rock idealists.

ok that is my 2 cents.

and who is this dumb band razrez? i listened to them on mypsace to see if it was anything interesting, and it really isnt. go check it out for yourself. another capital hill fashion punk band. send them on tour with the lashes. sponsored by taco bell, levis and hot topic. or whatever.

if you want to see a good show, stay off the f-ing hill, get down to georgetown and see something in a warehouse.

oh wait. then no one will make 5$ a drink off your dumb ass while you get liquored at the club.

i say if a band is on a major label, rip off as many mp3s as possible. and if you like the band, go to their website and give them cash through paypal.

I assume you are talking about a certain local promoter/manager whose bands litter the block party line up? Pfft, who cares?

Music is subjective. If you hate it, ignore it. That's far worse than screaming your lungs out about how much you hate Death Cab For Cutie for making boring, sweater-wearing indie rock.

There's enough good bands in this town that if you don't pay attention to the ones you can't stand they will eventually go away.

I dig the Spits, HEAD, Kinski, the Pulses and a few others. These bands aren't drawing major label interests or fast food/Hot Topic endorsements but they've all been playing music in this town for nearly a decade and still manage to put out QUALITY music and put on fun and interesting shows.

People love to hate the Lashes (the new Makers), but just wait. In 2 years time they'll be back to working at Bimbo's Burritos in order to pay back the major-label advance money after they couldn't sell 1,000 records.

Just ignore it.

Gotta agree with Dan 10 Things on the Gloryholes, surprised nobody else is onto this. Spits too. Top notch. Saw Zeke in April (or was it early May) at the Sunset, that was kick ass too. Historically speaking, Green River was a good show, as was Malfunkshun. U-Men too. Wicked Angel and Isolation were the two bands you had to sit through to see the out of town band (Spiders' Web, Gorilla Gardens era), and they were both pretty bad.

But the Sun City Girls? I guess I missed something because they were from Arizona. I don't like 'em though. Worked at a punk record store, and the day a new SCG double (or was it triple?) LP came in some time in the early '90s, my coworker demanded to listen to the entire thing all the way through. I worked on the side where the record player was, so I put it on 45 RPM to get through it faster. He never knew, and at the end of the day I told him much to his chagrin. He insisted we play it start to finish the next day, but it never happened.

Best ever band in Seattle would have to be the accused John Dahlin or Blaine era.

Had almost forgotten about them until my old drum instructor informed me he was now a member of the accused and was going to Europe with them for a tour. Fuckin' great band...

Good (hipster-proof) bands in Seattle? Hmm...

-Awesome
Yup, the name says it all. It's strange and sublime music. These guys (all eight billion of them) are going to go somewhere.

-Small Change
Super fantastic. We need more bands like this. It's a shame that no one seems to know about these guys yet. Oh well, another great pop band in Seattle that no one knows about. Seattle could have a great pop scene if all of the good popsters could unite and get on the same bills. Instead, we have wonderful nights of totally mismatched genres. OK, rant over.

-Curtains For You

I randomly caught these guys at the Sunset, and I was floored. I caught their next show at the High-Dive, and was like "Damn, they did it again. Wait, where are these guys from?" They are a pretty ace pop band. They just kept hitting the crowd with these little pop masterpieces. Hell, they did not even stop for applause until they had played like 4 or 5 songs. It was like I was listening to some alternate dimension bootleg b-side to Abbey Road. Granted, they owe sh*t-tons to The Beatles, but they still kept it original.

-Blue Checkered Record Player
Anything involving Sonny is pretty damn fun, isn't it? I've seen them live twice, and it always feels "right". I don't know any other way to explain it. Of all the Votolatos in town, he is the one making the best music. He's got a solid voice as well.

94th Street – okay so I am tooting my own horn on this one… KJ Sawka on the drums and TJ Berry (currently in the Panda Conspiracy and Mob Law) on guitar, vocals, and sax. You can’t deny that! There has never been and there will never be a band like 94th Street unless we reform which is highly unlikely. After all why wouldn’t the band I was in be one of my favorites, we played the kind of music I like and we ripped it to shreds!

Maktub – I don’t know about frat boys, I don’t like frat boys, I do like Maktub. Have you ever seen them live? If you haven’t then you don’t even know… all I have to say is Reggie Watts! And I can even do that one better, Alex Veley and Reggie Watts. Sure it’s an awesome band now, it was even more awesome then.

Novatone – or is it really just Ty Willman? They did not last long; I think if they were a group of “unknown” musicians with the same skill, the band would have lasted longer. They probably would have done it the old fashion way and played lots of show built a fan base and went from there. Ty Willman is my favorite local vocalist at the moment, have not seen Mass Sugar (his new band) yet but I mean to.

The Fastbacks were a very interesting band.

Did you know that throught the 80s and 90s there was a Fastbacks band in every American city with a population of 25,000 or more? In some of the larger cities, one could find perhaps even two or three Fastbacks bands. I myself have met and played with a large number of Fastbacks from different towns, only they had different names. The one unique difference between the hundreds of different Fastbacks with different names, and the band in Seattle with the name "Fastbacks," is that the Seattle version were friends with members of Pearl Jam.

And it was this that made the Seattle Fastbacks so unbelievably stunning.

I am very sad they are no longer a band.

Yeah. I totally dig what you call "butt rock." I am past caring when people who like the Fastbacks---or who think that anyone in Malfunkshun except Andrew Wood had any clue what he was doing---tell me I have no taste. There are people who like music, and people who like rock criticism; the latter have all the taste but the former have all the fun.

But, uh, dude, how exactly was Tad butt rock?

"Help Me, Jack Pepsi"? What the fuck was that supposed to mean? Sweet song, Tad. How was it butt rock? I guess judged by the butt rockers who liked that shit, like yourself. Should I say "grunge"? Ugh, a terrible word made up to sell a "sound." Best thing Tad ever did, and the only reason he was mildly famous for about 2 months, was get sued for using a yard sale photo of a guy grabbing titty on the cover of his record. Best thing I ever did related to Tad was sell that piece of shit to the highest bidder on Ebay. "Help Me Jack Pepsi"? Ouch.

FBX never did anything original? Whoa dude, get the mouth off the bong, unclog the ears, and listen to their records (best was up to "Very, Very Powerful Motor"). Curt Bloch is an amazing musician (and producer these days). Haven't seen Sgt Major so I can't say what he's doing now.

FBX were a great band to see live to, fun right down to that weird little French guy who alsways wore levi's and a levi's jacket (a Texas Tuxedo, but don't know what to call it on a Euro dude).

But like I started to say, opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and they all stink.

Ok, three world famous butt rock bands: Cinderella, Motley Crew, and TAD! OK, so maybe Tad's not really butt rock, but at that point in time, early '90s, there wasn't much butt rock going on (disclaimer: not my scene, man, so how would I know?) and it did seem that the more "metal" bands of Seattle drew that crowd. Sure, they dressed differently, but it was a lot of the same people (as well as some of the punks -- by 1990, there was enough crossover going on that punks and metalheads started to like the same shit).

But anyway, what was "Help Me Jack Pepsi" all about? I remember the video, it was cold, there was snow, someone fell through the ice, there were chainsaws... Does he prefer Pepsi over Coke? Does he masturbate using a Pepsi container? Is Jack Pepsi a real person?

But anyway, what was "Help Me Jack Pepsi" all about?

It was about a group of friends driving a car on a frozen lake in Idaho, and the ice broke. The truck went to the bottom of the lake, and it was Jack Daniels and Pepsi that gave Tad the strength to break free from his watery grave, and swim to the surface.

THIS REALLY HAPPENED.

I saw Tad in 1989, when there was LOTS of butt rock going on. I got a kick out of them. They were fat guys who turned somersaults onstage, with their guitars on. But butt-rock? The late-80s accusations of butt-rock against Soundgarden, those I could understand (if not give 2 shits about). But as a criticism of Tad it just never would have even occured to me.

I saw the Blood Circus/Tad tour in 88 or 89, and it was among the most hardcore things my North Idahoan self had yet seen/stage-dived at.
Anyway, I thought the term "butt rock" had fallen away as the indie/alternative hegemony dissipated, and later, as heavy metal (re-)arose as one of the most innovative styles of popular music....

Was it Blackhappy or Sadhappy or something that had a member die in about '94? I had just moved to AK summer of '94, went to a club my first weekend there. I remember it was all the buzz that just a week before, a Seattle band was there playing and one of the members was stabbed. I'm sure I could Wiki it, but I'm just too damn lazy right now.

It wasn't Blackhappy. They signed to a major label, changed their name to Shoveljerk, and died the ignoble death of a million previous independent bands.

I want to say Sadhappy, but I might be thinking of that Morphine fellow - Mark Sandman or Solomon or something, who died onstage. I always got those bands a bit confused.

And I too am too lazy (read: proud) to research on the Googles.

Sorry, got my memories confused - lost many a brain cell in the past 13 years. It wasn't a member of Black nor Sadhappy that was killed in AK. There was a stabbing/death at the same bar where Blackhappy played, but a member of this band was not involved. A bar patron and member of a local band was killed and said venue closed after the Blackhappy show. Two different events. Sorry for any urban legend and rumor confusion. Carry on.

Sadhappy was a local, jazzy progrock thing in the early 90s, that included Skerrik on sax, and a few other technically spazzy luminaries of the time.
At least a couple of those guys today are connected all around the country to great session work and a variety of high profile gigs.

Blackhappy was a group of ska teens from Spokane. They were a medium-sized ticket for a while, but pretty much forgotten by 1995.

Morphine was a pop songwriting type band, that used saxophones in a way I like best: as a rhythm instrument or to drive simple, hooky melody lines.

As far as I know all three members of Sadhappy are still alive. It may have been one of the copious members of Blackhappy, when they became Shoveljerk they dropped half the band, and went to suck balls mode. They dropped the horns, and the percussion player. Don't get me wrong, all were talented, but the sound was lost in the ether after they lost the rest of the band.
