View Full Version : Why two pride parades?

I do not know what the main points of contention are that led to this, but why can't we have it both ways. For instance gather downtown and parade up thru Broadway or visa verse. I think walking en mass thru downtown helps our visibility thus helping the community. I know change can be difficult for some people, but who wants the same route year after year? And while I understand that merchants on the hill count on pride events for their bottom lines that should not be a compelling reason for keeping the parade on Broadway forever.

I have an even better question: Why any at all?

Well, how about this...That 'Stadium Tax' they collect, I don't use it, as i'm not a big sports goer. How about I take that money and apply it to Pride Parade expenses...

I have an even better idea, lets get rid of that stadium tax....

One more thing, while we are at it. At least the Stadium Tax goes towards something that generates lots of jobs and money where the gay parade generates very little money (on one stupid day) and maybe a handful of jobs....

So yes the Seahawks are more important to the economy of Seattle then some gay floats...

Hmmm, I wonder how much Tax money goes towards the Pride Parade...

When it was on the Hill, not so much did. And as the attendence was over 100k, and it was the biggest day of business for most of the shops up there, a fair amount of money was generated.

1 dollar is too much. If it generated so much money WHY DO YOU NEED ANY TAX MONEY AT ALL?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The money generated goes back to the city via tax. So likely it's a net gain for the city...

Probably goes against your world view that homosexuals could in any way contribute to society, so I understand why you may have missed that.

Now this is a completely vile statement. Why would you assume something about my world view which you obviously do not understand in that you do not see why I object to public monies going toward either Safeco Field or a Gay Pride Parade?

I have nothing against homosexuals in any way, I just object to tax money going towards entertainment. They do not need the money, that parade could go on without it, lets use that money instead to hire more police to clean up pioneer square, would you not agree?

Whell, Honestly I cannot argue either way on the Tax issue, as I'm not sure how much tax money, if any, is going towards the Pride parade.

I do know that the Seattle Out and Proud folk do have to pay a lot of money to put the event on, and they're raising money from the groups marching, and the people setting up booths.

And all the power to them, just do not use tax money!

How do you feel about using tax money to generate business that generates even more tax money? (which would allow an overall lowering of taxes)

Maybe there should be three gay parade routes...one for tops, one for bottoms, and one for the switch hitters...

Think that's a stupid statement? Now you know how I feel about Palmer's post there...

To actually debate in the public forum the where's and why's of your parade route is somewhat trite and well...pretty gay ...I suppose your just being you...but did you really think it would do any good?

Personally I dont care IF public tax money was utilized or not...

The gay population of Seattle is a large contributing member to local and other state taxes.... they pay them too...far as I know there isnt a 'tax exempt' status for being gay so if public funds are used, what the fuck business is it of yours? And on another note, what the fuck can you do if they did? Flame them on the forum? Ooohhh how scary...

So anyways you all figure out where your going to parade at and Ill figure out where traffic is going to cluster on a particular day in Seattle...

The debate may seem trite on the surface, but from what I can tell, it really comes down to a debate as to whether the parade is a celebration for the LGBT community, or is directed at the greater seattle community as a chance to say "we're here, we're queer, get used to it"

So then you would not mind if tax money went to a Christian Parade, since you know Christians pay taxes too....?

It already does...All that faith-based initiative money goes to any number of Christian events.

Then again, it's probably a straw man argument, as I don't believe much, if any tax money went to the pride parade.

Mostly in the form of police, i would think. I think positively-charged parades are a good thing.

Tax money goes towards all kinds of things that people don't agree with. Its just the way it is. You'll drive yourself crazy worrying about it.

I believe they have to pay a fair amount for the permit, which goes towards the police. I also believe they are excercising their constitutional right to assemble, and their constitutional right to free speech, so it would be illegal for the city govt to deny them the right to do so, even if it does cost taxpayer dollars.

Personally, I don't mind my tax dollars going to support the constitutional rights of others and myself, even if the others are saying things I don't believe in.

but, why are there two pride events?

On the tax money and parade issue, the pride parades recently have drawn upwards of 100,000 people being second in size only to the Seafair parade. Sefair is not my cup of tea, but I have no objection to city funds being used for safety and traffic control. Sometimes tax money is used to pay for visits by the likes of Bush yet the majority of Seattleites who oppose Bush must help pay for his visits, now there is a colossal waste of taxpayers money.
