My first four posts were totally civil and contained no large, colored or capitalized text. I never attacked any specific individual until I myself was directly targeted.

Secondly, I've now made it clear that the retaliation and subsequent "fight" was all in fun and not to be taken seriously. I apologized for offending anybody that may have taken it seriously and the main two people I was arguing with have accepted that graciously and ceased their attacks. You're the only one still bitter about it and that's you're choice alone. I backed down and made peace before I left. If you want to keep a chip on your shoulder then go ahead, I'm not the one that has to the deal with the weight of it. Several of us had no idea who you were referring to, but 'not naming names' seemed an obvious indication that you had some pretty specific people in mind. l'm pretty sure Abulafia came to the same conclusion we did. lf nothing else, knowing you were baiting us earns you just about any response you got.

l think you'd benefit from not leaping to swift conclusions about who is or is not a 'troll' around here. You clearly have a different definition of the term than we do. Let me give you an illustration of what l see as part of the problem.

A group of long time acquaintances and friends are having a party. They've all known each other through longevity and close proximity. They may not all be best friends, but they're still having a good time.

Then a group of people crash the party. No biggie, new people are cool, except they're all going 'heeeeylookitmewelcomemetalktomeorl'llcallyounames !'. Most people just want to hang, so they tell them to chill out and maybe they poke a little fun. Then all hell breaks loose. The girls pout and throw shoes at bystanders, and one of the male members (only?) threatens to knock a couple of partygoers down to size.

Then after they've done a good job pissing everyone off (with one party member announcing quite clearly her mission to get them out), the leader of the pack announces that it's all a joke. You can imagine this wouldn't go too well, especially when he goes, 'l was just kidding, what assholes for believing me!'. His manner of assimilating is, oddly, to insult a community, and when it responds with precisely the reaction he provokes, he blames the group, calls them trolls, and then ridicules them for calling him out on it.

The troll here looks like you. To be utterly frank, l don't owe you any civility in this situation; nobody really does. The only reason l'm choosing that route is because l'm on meds, and because l often extend civility just in case, even though it's mostly an utter waste of my time. l'm hoping you'll sit for a minute, think about why we might have good reason to be wary, and maybe we can start all over with some real and respectful conversation.

But in terms of this claim, I don't think MrL knows what a "troll" is, in internet terms. I have always been confused by this term as well, because it often seems that new people come here, act like assholes, and then when they are called on it, those of us doing the calling are called, in return, "trolls." So anyway, I looked it up, and this is what I found (and I got this from the internet, so I'm sure it's right):

"An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion" [source: Wikipedia]

MrL jumped in here, dragging his hand-picked ("contact me with this dummy mail account, and I'll give you the url") posse with him, and started making claims he had necks to shit down. I.e.: he is a troll.

Personally, I didn't care who he meant. But I knew he couldn't shit down mine (not to be all cocky, but I've had much much bigger assholes try—RI, anyone? [then again, at least RI was relatively smart]—and I've managed to get rid of them), and I wanted him gone, so I decided to make him a laughingstock.

In the intervening day or so, however, I went back to his old board, and read some threads he'd started there—especially the one about "come hate me" or "insult me" or something like that (I posted it somewhere here)—and I decided that I wanted absolutely nothing to do with this person. I've not a clue what he is like in "the real life," but the persona he has grown for himself on the internet (which is summed up nicely in his avatar) has precisely no character and a personality I'd cross the street to avoid.

So, I'd taken a day or two to be as horrible as I can here, and then decided I'd had it. I don't come here to be like that. I can be an ass now and then if the trash needs taking out, but a good friend and I had a conversation a month or so ago when we asked each other, "is it ok to be an asshole to someone because they are horrible and you are trying to get rid of them?" and neither of us were sure that we felt it is ok. I've tried to stop doing it—I'd also grown to somewhat dislike that ("go get them! destroy them!") aspect of Abs—and this time I made the decision to go back on my decision.

And then I read up on MrL's persona. And personae are personae, but I know a lot of personae here and a lot of the people behind the personae, and save a few jokey sock puppets I've noticed two things: either (1) the person and the persona are fairly close in essentials (this is probably the case with me, save the strange fact so many people think that Abs is a man, or very very mean [who could really be as mean as Abs is?; come on—her meanness is farcical, and reserved purely for assholes], or for some reason short or heavy. Also, my voice sounds nothing like what you'd expect) or (2) the persona comes to affect and alter the person behind it (I've noticed that when Abs is being a real jerk, I can end up in a bad mood—it's not that whatever happens here pisses me off; it's just that the mood it takes to write things here bleeds into my mood off board. This is part of the reason I've tried not to be the big mean manatee so much lately).

So anyway. I read up a bit on MrL's persona, and decided that although I don't know the person beneath it, I know enough to know I want nothing to do with it. I have found nothing redeemable. One who delights in others' disdain is utterly without character. No person is that distant from their persona, even if they wish to believe they are. What sort of person uses "gayfag" and "lez" as insults? What sort of person thinks that calling a person homosexual is an insult? And so I did what I do when I find myself in this situation: I put the whole lot of them on ignore (the only other time I've put people on ignore is to stop myself from being a jerk to them; in these situations, I have PMd the individuals to let them know what I'm doing and why). A few people have used the party or house analogy, and whilst I find this dangerous (both because this is not a private forum and because I'd have shot most of you off my porch months ago—you first, Duncan. Plus, stop drinking all my scotch. MW! Not on my couch. Please), I'll pursue it. If someone comes to your house and behaves inappropriately, you first ignore them politely and hope they will catch up and alter their behavior. If they continue, you either (1) heighten your politeness, which is the most formal show of rudeness (this is what I would do in "the real life") or you (2) try to humiliate them into leaving, throw a drink in their face, make everyone else laugh at them, etc. (which is something I would never do in real life, but the heightened politeness thing does not work very well on an internet forum). If neither of these work, you ask them to leave and, if they don't, you pick them up and walk them to the door and close it behind them.

After deciding I could not engage in (2) any further (sorry, Duncan), I asked them to leave. Then I read up on MrL (and some of his posse) and decided that I was completely through with them. I did the internet equivalent of shutting someone out of your house—shutting them up, or at least putting them out of my earshot—which is putting them all on ignore. I can see that they are moving their lips, but nothing is coming out of their mouths.

Oh. In re "breeder," this used to be a derogatory term for heterosexuals, and was usually used by homosexuals. If a couple are having a screaming row on a plane then I think that it's a good idea to ask them to be quiet or even tell them to shut up, even if doing so could be considered a breach of good manners. Which it certainly could. Another example is rather a hoary old chestnut. If someone comes into my local pub behaving in a drunk and / or inappropriate manner then I feel justified in behaving like an ass to them. I would certainly try other ways first. However, if they persisted, and if most of the pub felt the same way, then I, or we, would have no qualms about behaving like an ass. While I'd like to attribute higher motives to it it's realistically aimed at getting rid of them.

I think that there are situations where the only possible response to extreme bad manners is involves bad manners. It's not ideal. If it's possible to respond suitably while keeping good manners then that's the best way. However, sometimes it isn't. Often this may just be about protecting turf. We all have places that are special and important for us. If people try and destroy that then I think it's reasonable to protect it.

I also wonder if sometimes responding with bad manners isn't kinder. A club I'm a member of blackballs, albeit informally. Any current member can prevent an aspiring member from joining. I think that if I were an aspiring member then I'd probably rather someone told me honestly why they didn't want me rather than some secretive process. I appreciate that it's not an either or case.

It's a semantic thing I won't defend, but I suppose I was using "being an ass" to designate intentionally offensive action. I'd normally think of "having bad manners" as something unintentional.

But I can't defend this.

At any rate, I need to think more on this. Reminds me vaguely of something my father once said in re dealing with especially rude or obnoxious people: you treat them like mules, viz hit them in the head with a 2 x 4 in order to get their attention.

It depends on how well you know yourself. Do you really have the sense to know when people are truly being assholes and deserve some kind of verbal spanking? When you perceive that someone is being an asshole do you respond appropriately or do you tend to over-react in spades?

In my various jobs and relationships I've slowly discovered patterns where I don't interpret people's true intentions well and it just makes things harder in the end, so I try to keep my mouth shut and just let things go, it's not easy and I fail at it sometimes.

But that's just me.

Honestly, Dong? Yes. I feel I have a pretty good sense of this, and whenever I engage with such a person my first two interactions are aimed at figure it out for sure.

Both. l like to think more the former than the latter, but maybe l'm just being optimistic. Sometimes l'll see a response to an I,A, or just in general that rubs me entirely the wrong way, regardless of what the original post is about, how it's written, or who wrote it. l find myself wondering at the random vitriol l see thrown out by the regular and passing assholes.

But then l wonder at my own, and how often l project personal shit into my discussions here. l believe that when l catch myself over-reacting, l do a pretty good job of admitting it and apologizing for it. This often encourages the assholes to try taking advantage of the moment (and they usually fail), but l'd rather deal with lame shit and admit my mistake than pretend l'm blameless when l know full well my attitude is crooked for some reason other than the person at whom it's directed.

l'm sure l'm one of these. l know there are times when l'm just plain old pissy and snap at someone, and l do my best to be aware of why my responses reflect the particular opinions they do. Yes we had a rocky start, but I win people over in time, and this is the way it's always been at every forum or chatroom I've ever joined.
