Actually, I am more excited about FLATSTOCK 7 (http://www.flatstock.com/) then any of the bands this year.

Devo would be pretty kick-ass. Bumbershoot would just be a big pit I'd be throwing my money into. I'm gonna pass this year. The very next weekend is Cause+Effect and Iris at the Catwalk. Seeing that will more than makeup for Bumbershoot.

...Slumbershoot is a real yawner this year...and that's too bad for the people who worked so hard to make it happen this year...but ya know, I'm gonna' pass on it too. I'd rather spend time trying to kill myself with a pellet gun than to pay and then stand through the boredom. Ugggggh!

Last year's crowds weren't so bad. I had broken my face up at Kingston sk8 park and was dreading the crowd but it was cool, less people.

One really cool highlight this year will be In Resonance, a sound art exhibit in the Northwest Rooms. Thurston Moore is among the internationally renown fat cats of audio art presenting peices. I'm glad they are doing some cool experimental things, last year's exhibit's were great. I have some pics of last year's and a review of last year here. (http://www.badempire.com/archive/2004_09_01_archive.html#109504525046387345)

And come on, how can you not get behind this many great bands, crowd phobia is an ok excuse, but really, this many great local and national acts?:

Funny- I am actually looking forward to BumberShoot this year! It must be that we have completely different tastes in music, because this is the first one in some time that sounded appealing to me! I thought last year was pretty dull.

Funny- I am actually looking forward to BumberShoot this year! It must be that we have completely different tastes in music, because this is the first one in some time that sounded appealing to me! I thought last year was pretty dull.Ya know...you got a point, we probably do have different tastes in music...but I would probably be looking more forward to it if I weren't so burned out on the styles of music that are playing.

I mean Bo Diddely would be cool to see...but I am sooooo done with Garbage, and I personally think The Donnas are bit over-hyped. The Ruby Doe is a PLUS along with Maktub, but the solo artists are boring to me in my current headspace.

Minus the Bear and Harvey Danger? Seen 'em...The Pharcyde...OVER-RATED, I dig The Posies but don't wanna hear that right now, and I haven't seen Pretty Girls Make Graves, but that isn't gonna' make me wanna go. Ya know?

Devo? Don't care for the nostalgia...was glad when new wave was over and don't care to revisit it. Dashboard Confessional? OMG! Sorry, but I burned all my cardigan sweaters and I can sing a song without the need for a tissue. The Decemberists I have heard good things about...but again...any and all bands starting with "The" is just fucking beating the god damn dead horse into the mother fucking ground. I mean come on...get a little more original with your names. I'm more in the mood to hear really good rock and hard rock bands. The whole hardcore, screamo, emo, punk, indie thing is just pouncing on my last nerve. And don't even mention metal. OMG! There is SO MUCH CRAP out there! I think my biggest problem is in most of the recordings I can "hear" the drugs on them. That is just crappy in my book. Blah! But what do I know...I'm just a meager local musician and the rest of these bands have sold more records than I did last year...so I'll just shaddup!

Maybe next year...I know that alot of people have put alot of HARD work into this and I know that The Stranger works hard for these events as well...so my hat is off to all of you involved. I'm just not coming this year....and that is all.

:-)

"I think my biggest problem is in most of the recordings I can "hear" the drugs on them."

I dunno, this usually works as a plus for me. Depends on the drugs, I guess.

I'll probably skip Bumbershoot this year, as usual. Tempted to see Devo (one person's 'New Wave Revival' is another person's 'Holy Fuck, If They Play "She Didn't Know I Was A Midget" I Might Just Soil My Shorts, Or Hell, I'd Even Be Happy With "Space Junk"'), but I'll probably just go to the Mothersbaugh opening at Roq La Rue instead.

Good to see a high percentage of BShoot skippers here. More elbow room for me. Must have been the sentiment last year too, not too crowded and now that the beer jails are bigger I can actually get in without a long wait.

You must really be burned out on most every genre if you can't find one day worth going to , Rane. What genre are you *not* burned out on?

I agree the lineup is less than stellar and it has been for a few years, especially compared to fests like Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. BShoot, trying to be everything to everyone with its wide array of genres, which allows it to draw from a wider range of performers, you'd think it'd get more and better national acts. Look at ACLimits, it fills 8 stages with top notch roots rock bands, then look at BShoots' *one* roots rock stage without a performer that would be in ACL's top 20.

Oh well, won't do the crowd for four days like someone here is but I'll do Saturday with John Butler, Guthrie/Irion, Billy JO Shaver and Tift Merritt, and maybe the mellower Friday with Garbage, Chris Stamey, M Ward, The Donnas and the NY Dolls are a curiosity worth a peek.

I was going to reply with an in-depth answer...

..but no, I'll just roll my eyes and laugh...cuz' I stated my personal opinion about Bumbershoot...and that is seemingly perplexing you?

Are you one of those people that has a problem with somebody when they don't like a particular thing that you may or may not like, but it just bugs you anyway and it makes you question their opinion? I mean, like you really need an answer? That wasn't a question...that was a statement. That is what you call "psycho" dude.

There is nothing wrong with me not liking the line-up. So what is your problem?

Rane - Was your last post a reply to my question about what style you're not burned out on? If so, what's with all the psycho analysis? I don't care if what you like or dislike doesn't agree with me. Just a simple question, but if you require an explanation to legitimize questions to you: I was wondering if there's a genre of music I'm unfamiliar with that's new or re-invigorated that you can fill me in on.

Well, there wasn't a "sea of people" Saturday. Crowds were down making it very pleasant. I'm guessing because the price is up and big name acts down. How was it for you?

I went Sunday for The Posies. It stopped raining for their set which turned out one of the best Posies shows I have ever seen! There was even an encore that included some partial nudity.
The crowd was HUGE! I was standing on the back corner of the stage looking out at the sea of people, it was pretty incredible. I would guess at least 2000 people.
We left right after to catch them at Easy Street where they played different songs so it was like and extended set in two venues. The whole night was pretty amazing!

I didn't see anything else at Bumbershoot this year, but it was still a good time.

How was it for me? Well, it wasn't anything for me cause I didn't go ::ba dum CHING:: Of course, I say that in jest: obviously the question is directed towards everyone in general.

But it appears I'm not the only one who doesn't think much of Bumbershoot these days, among other reasons including the ones you stated, as you say the crowds were down.

Maybe the prices were raised in response to the ridiculous crowds last year. Seriously, last year I could barely walk by 4 pm the day I went. I waited literally two hours to see a comedy set, and both my friend and I took offense to the fact we couldn't stay for subsequent sets unless we got back in line (a losing cause given the wait for the set we watched), though I understand the idea is to give others a chance to see the shows and that Bumbershoot's meant to be a grab bag experience.

However, there just isn't enough to the whole shebang that tickles my fancy enough to willingly pay $28 and give up entire days to spend hours standing in line to see minutes of entertainment. As a former outsider now living in Seattle, the format of the festival just comes off as inherently flawed.

Which, of course, is why I didn't go this year.

Brodeo
September 6th, 2005, 04:03 PM
This was the first year I completely bailed. Who could justify paying those prices? The local bands can all be seen for as little as $5 without having to deal with some shithead from the suburbs standing in front of you. And the headliners? Iggy would have been worth it, but my ass isn't going to a stadium show on a Monday night after an already long 3 day weekend.

In having to dig deep into Bumbershoot's schedule to create the Stranger's guide every year, on one hand I'm usually impressed with the attention to multiple mediums such a grand scope commands. There are popular authors, comedians, visual artists, and theater types all in one place (as well as the music), and with Bumbershoot as the pathway you can easily (well, in theory, it depends on how many people are there from year to year) go between mediums (although they have to move the comedians to a bigger space next year. It's insane how long people said they've had to wait for the past two years). I think it's great that this year the fest had, for example, Wheedle's Groove, the Locust (although Ex Hall is a really terrible place to hear music), Earlimart, and the Stooges, on top of the different artistic disciplines, as that's just a cross section of what I like. And if you got your tickets early (at I think $18 a pop) and looked at the overall package, I think the festival remains a valuable part of our arts scene.

If you were to look at it only as a music festival, though, it seems that the aim is a general, usually pretty topical survey of what's happening in various genres, although there are one or two left-field artists thrown in every year. Personally, for a grand music fest, I'd like to see someone take up where Bumbershoot leaves off...maybe Seattle Center isn't the place to create an All Tomorrow's Parties or Arthurfest, but it would be great to have an organization/promoter pull together an edgier event that isn't for BS but would work at another space. It happens on a smaller scale all the time. I know Sasquatch! aims to do something like that but I'm not so much a fan of the all indie rock concept...K Records hosted some of their roster at a farm in rural Washington earlier this summer...the more twists on the standard concept the better in my book.

lilblackcat - Posie fan huh? Me too. Psef linked photos with one of the Posie's half naked guitarist at the Music & More forum.

I know what you mean about lines Gomez. I gave up standing in lines for scheduled indoor performances years ago. I go just for the music and map out a plan for going from venue to venue, sometimes leaving before the last song to get a jump getting away. With the crowd Saturday, didn't need one.

I too would like to see a music-only Seattle festival, Jennifer, and perhaps with limited musical genres like Sasquatch or Austin City Limits' 3 day, 8 stages Americana festival which allows for more than a cursory lineup of a particular genre like BShoot. BShoots eclecticism *does* have the advantage of exposing people to types of music or arts they wouldn't necessarily seek out otherwise though. I'm not familiar with All Tomorrows and Arthurfest.

I think BShoot is a great event and the $18 an excellent value. Maybe now, with outlandish $50 plus concert prices for one artist, we're not seeing them at BShoot like we did 5 to 10 years ago. Too expensive.

I caught Charlie Hunter, Bo Diddly and Elvis Costello - They locked us out of the Bill Frisell show as we were a little late. Caught pieces of other sets as well like Visqueen. I enjoyed myself and, what I saw, was great. I must admit.. I was definitely more excited about seeing The Presidents last year than I was about Bumbershoot this year.

Elvis Costello, Bo Diddly, Devo, Iggy and the Stooges ...

There have been times when Bumbershoot was worth the admission price.

In 2006 I was delighted to pay the rate to get in to watch the "Bumberbout" roller derby nationals all day long.

Last year I stood outside near the stage where Smoosh was playing for a little while, and then went home.

The musical line-up this year looks like something I'd check out if it was folklife and I could decide whether to pay or not, but there is no way I'm planning my weekend around what Bumbershoot has going this year.

I went yesterday, and while I overpaid I still had fun. I saw The Valley at the sky church which was cool, Grynch at the Fisher Pavillion, The Fall Of Troy and Unearth at the Exhibition Hall who were both good and brought a ton of energy. Saul Williams who was way over people's head but was very entertaining, and ofcourse Beck who was more mellow compared to past concerts but still put on a good show. Not to mention all the art shows going on around the center, I'm glad to see this festival still going on despite Seattle's leaders trying to give this city a whole makeover. Enjoy it while you can!

Spent most of Saturday at the NW Court meeting several fellow bumbeerers.. The local in-the-round which included a poetry slammer was pretty lackluster. Really enjoyed Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric's clever wit and upbeat songs. He's not much of a guitarist and could have used a lead guitarist. Had a walk to the Green for Saul Williams, an okay rap-rocker. Back at NW, enjoyed Tim Finn's trio, Neil's bro, opening with Always Take The Weather. There sure seemed to be alot of duo and trios this year as opposed to full bands. Less of the pie to divide up in these expensive travel days I guess. Finn tried to make up for no drummer by kicking a bass drum while he strummed. Then it was over to see Nada Surf. Never made it to Nada as we go sucked in by this geeky hyperactive singer for !!! (Chk Chk Chk), a rockin party band at the Green. Pretty entertaining way to end the day.

Was expecting a smaller crowd on Monday. Nope, huge, despite the $40/day price tag. What's with all the teenyboppers and school age slackers with disposable money hanging out? First band I saw, Blitzen Trapper at Broad St, a roots rock 6 piece from Portland with heavy guitars, was the best band I saw this day. Very good. Never went indoors or to the Stadium, but there seemed to be a dearth of good lead guitarists. The Old 97's guy was okay, suffering from a wimpy tone from his Strat. Old 97's at the Mural, enjoyed them, especially Rhett Miller and the bassist's "oooo" harmonies. I give an A for effort to Langhorne Slim, the guy was working the stage and really belted it out. Another trio, and like most acts Monday afternoon, small and unimpressive: Two Gallants (noisey duo), X Levitation Cult (trio), John Vanderslice (duo). Finally found an eye opener in the Pakistani band at the Green, Celo i Sabbah, two percussionists, a guitarist, a sequencer operator and female singers, although one tune had recorded lead vocals and the gals just danced. Ended the evening with another electronica heavy band, Battles at Broad St. Kind of cool that both guitarists played their guitar and synthesizer/sequencer at the same time. Now if only their guitar playing was as good as their synth fabrications. I declare, a good day, yup, "enjoy it while" we have it.
