Your tax dollars at work?
Washington citizens, you have a right to find out what is happening to our tax dollars in education?
North Seattle Community College (NSCC) has announced the decision to close a very popular program, the Culinary Arts program and to put on hold the Heating Air Conditioning and Ventilation Design (HVAC) program for one year.
Could this be to prepare for a lawsuit?
3 women, (1 whom was 17 at the time of her assault) have accused North Seattle Community Colleges tenured Professor Mir Jalalyar of stalking, sexual assault and harassment.
Would NSCC and the District Office be protecting ones own?
North Seattle Community College has just announced the closure of the Culinary Arts program. The Culinary Arts program is one of the highest programs in demand at North Seattle Community College. Due to the fact that this program serves widely diverse populations, could this be why this program is on the chopping block? Seattle Public schools provides funding for this program for severely disabled students who have graduated high school and would like to aspire to something better than working at McDonalds, or continuing their lifecycle on welfare or SSI.
THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN RUN FOR MANY YEARS WITH GREAT SUCCESS.
The Heating Air Conditioning and Ventilation Design (HVAC) program being put on hold for one year due to the instructor leaving – regardless to the new students who have just signed up for the Fall 2005 Quarter. What about hiring a new instructor? The HVAC program is the only one of its kind on the West Coast. Will it really take a year to find a qualified candidate to teach or is this the beginning of the end for the program.
What is North Seattle Community College doing? They are in financial budget crunch even though they have paid back the several million dollars “misplaced” due to an accounting error. NSCC claims this because they are unable to get enough full time students, so they are not filling positions which remained vacant during the lean years, yet have created many new positions for DIRECTORS and DEANS. Not only have they created these new positions, they were not posted as ‘open positions’ and hiring was quietly done from within.
Looking at North Seattle Community College from the outside in – it does appear that it NSCC is administratively top heavy in many departments. Is North Seattle Community College becoming a 4-year wannabe or getting ready to sell that beautiful huge parcel of land to a developer for luxury condominiums so that maybe the other 3 colleges may benefit? (and if new condos, wouldn't you want local HVAC graduates around to hire?)
Shouldn't the Siegal Center be investigated? Let us ask all those very important people at those huge offices at 1500 Harvard Avenue.
The Seattle Community Colleges are not individual. They remain a district and the money is funneled through District Headquarters, the above mentioned Siegal Center. Prior to money being funneled to the colleges - The Siegal Center lops off their 10-20% that should be used for Student Services or keeping these programs open.
Instead we are paying for 7 Vice Chancellors as well as several campus chancellors, a president of the district, as well as a president at each school? (And now a tenured professor on paid administrative leave!)
Call Chancellor Mitchell's Office (206) 587-3872 - Ask some questions !! (206) 587-4100 Main line. Call all the investigative reporters you know. Thanks.
Community Colleges were designed to assist a student who could not move directly in to 4-year college or a 2-year degree OR lately, with the help of agencies, like WORKSOURCE & UNEMPLOYMENT SECURITY, the Worker Retraining programs, where you are able to train for a profession or upgrade your skills and create opportunities to move forward to a new job that might allow yourself and your family to live above our sky-rocketing poverty line.
Well, it looks like we will have a few more unemployed joining the ranks from North Seattle Community College - maybe they will be able to utilize the Worker Retraining services at another campus.
South Seattle Community College faced the same budget challenges once upon a time and they were supported. Why not NSCC?
Shame on you Chancellor Mitchell and those who made these decisions at NSCC. Shame.
